At the beginning of things… well, no need to go back that far. Yet it could be the beginning of a never-ending story, as Germany’s infamous red tape forced us to go around in circles and fill in countless forms and applications before dealing with tasks of actual importance. In a case like ours, founding a company, there are rules and regulations to be considered. Luckily, the nice people of the administration offices would gladly help. Would but can’t as they’re barely able to understand all the legal stuff themselves, referring instead to the cryptic instructions on their forms and applications. How someone makes a living out of that is beyond us to comprehend.

As the introduction already hinted at, this week inflicted some organisational torment on us. Tax law, the registration of our company and the opening of accounts were on the menu. Fascinating still that german civil servants are able to obfuscate even the simplest of tasks from within their private office world and rob us of our time. Don’t even try to be smart and call them for information about how to get something done right and without problems. Sure, you will get the information and it will in fact be a real help when filling out those forms. But that doesn’t mean that afterwards they won’t tell you what was agreed upon over telephone is in fact not valid. And yes, you will have to fill out the same forms all over again. That is not to mention all the paperwork that has to be signed. By all four of us, to be sure. Wasn’t that why we chose a CEO so he could sign documents in our stead? Oh, nevermind. We’ll file that attempt of shifting the responsibility onto Johannes as »utter waste of time«.

So be it. We have passed the most important bureaucratic obstacles this week and a good part of the german economic world into the bargain. Thus in the next weeks we can focus on actually doing something worthwile.
