Wow. Another month has passed and the temperatures seem to be rising by the day. Of course, we could go for a swim. We could go outside and enjoy the summer. Instead, we’re going to stay inside and work. Time for an update on the progress of Mercenaries 3025.

In the last weeks, quite a lot has happened in Mercenaries 3025. We settled on the main framework we are going to use – and it’s ZEND. The ZEND Framework provides us with a database abstraction layer, full support for an MVC development style and still remains highly accessible and—most importantly—extensible. Porting our previously written code to ZEND only took one or two weeks while providing us with an excellent basis for our project.

Another major step forward was in user experience. There are a number of buzzwords out there, no one wants to here anymore. We’re not going to use the one ending with »2.0.«, promise. What we are going to tell you, however, is that Mercenaries 3025 uses AJAX. That is a good thing because it enables us to provide a user experience similar to that of a desktop application. Simple inputs like changing the unit roster won’t require you to click a submit button every time and sites will generally load faster. On the whole, this will make Mercenaries 3025 feel smooth and highly responsive.

Those were significant developments. However, we feel progress could be even faster. That’s why we’ve all taken a one-week vacation. But instead of going to some tropical island we are going to lock ourselves in Dirk’s kitchen for a couple of days. At the end of that week, we expect development of Mercenaries 3025 to have progressed quite a bit.

Of course, not everyone will be able to participate in this great event. But even though you might still be stuck on that tropical island, you can expect us to present a small feature afterwards, maybe even one or two screenshots.

For now, we have to go back to work. The coffee is almost ready.
