Do you hear that sound? Yes, that’s the sound of us not being very good at writing blog entries around here. Also, and more importantly, it is the sound of hard work going on behind the scenes. While we might not be great writers we are certainly gaming enthusiasts so don’t mistake a lack of new information for a stalling of development for Mercenaries 3025. Stil don’t believe us? We’ll see what what we can do about that.

We already told you about our in-game chat system but let’s look at some details. As you might already know, the whole system is based on Jabber or more precisely XMPP[1]. This gives us a wide array of possibilites for about any aspect of personal communication. XMPP is an open protocol and we were having quite a bit of fun with it. For instance, players in Mercenaries 3025 will be able to navigate the site, buy armor, start missions, etc. while at the same time maintaining a persistent chat session. Clicking on links shouldn’t boot you out of your ongoing conversations. So it won’t.

Even more interesting, we are developing a bot system that will give you mission briefings and answer your questions concerning specific contracts. Most other games’ NPC dialogue system revolves around selecting from a number of pre-defined answers. Our NPC bots are able to respond to the messages you send them via chat. Obviously there is some voodoo involved here but we can assure you, that the system works really well. And who knows what kind of easter-eggs will be hidden in the NPC’s “personality” for you to find?

Finally, we are currently set to begin the beta phase of Mercenaries 3025 in 2008. Not one of those cheesy two-point-o-ish betas, mind you – this is going to be the regular kind, the one ultimately leading to a final version. Remember those? While it would be a little premature to set a precise date just yet, we will certainly be back with more on this as development progresses.
